Rock Star Guide to the Galaxy with The Gossip - Stay tuned February 29, 2008

Filed under: Hot Situation - Oregon — admin @ 12:41 pm

Yes, we finally have dates and confirmation to shoot our next Rock star Guide to the Galaxy with The Gossip in Portland this next weekend. Crazy! But Rock stars know what’s up. They can list their favorite spots in 1.2 seconds and it will be amazing. According to them, “We were raised in Arkansas by women, wolves and cassettes. We formed in 2000 in a cold basement in Olympia, Washington.” Currently they reside in Portland, Oregon.

The plan thus far is that we are featuring Brace who is also a bad ass DJ. My hopes and dreams in this next week is that Beth Ditto will also we be inspired to show us some of her fave spots. After all she is on my hero’s list.

This means I’m also producing a Hot Situation Travel Guide to Portland. Queer kids holler at me from Portland. Thus far we have some special guest art stars….more to come.

Michelle Tea is one of my San Francisco Heroes February 26, 2008

I recently asked Michelle Tea if she would star in the San Francisco Hot Situation travel video. In fact, I myspaced her yesterday.

When I think of queer San Francisco, her book Valencia is one of the first cultural icons that comes to mind. When I was in college she was one of the “Celesbians” that we all talked about. A hip question at a party was, “Have you read Michelle Tea’s book Valencia?”

I first read the book when my best friend and I went to Brazil (my second time) for my senior thesis internship. My first week in Rio de Janeiro I got terribly ill and begged my friend for any distraction. I had finished the one book I had brought. She had just finished reading Valencia and handed it over. “This is great for you. It’s about dyke drama and San Francisco.” I think the book cured me.

My SF wish is that Michelle is excited to be in the show and then we walk and talk down Valencia St. as she points out some of the spots the book refers to and tells a funny story. And then maybe she updates us on the latest about Rent Girl. TV series or not? Wouldn’t that be fun?

Follow up: The SF wish came true! Michelle is interested in starring in the video. Yes!!

Crashpadseries and Ani Difranco February 25, 2008

I’m sure that Ani has never even heard of the Crashpadseries, but never the less I’m sure there are Ani fans who like Shine Louise Houston’s film The Crash Pad and the new online series www.crashpadseries.com. This last Sunday was our once a month crashpadseries shoot in a hidden San Francisco location. I’ll give a hint - it’s in the Mission district. But that’s all I’ll tell you. We welcomed a new model to the entourage named Abby Normal who at a glance reminds me of Ani Difranco. Abby has dyed blue faux hawk hair and a pretty face - I swear I’ve been to an Ani concert when she was sporting that hair do. Here in this vid it’s pink and braided. If you are an Ani fan, check out www.crashpadseries.com this month.

If you don’t know about the crashpadseries, it’s an online erotic dramatic series produced by and for queer women. Our hopes and dreams, I think, is that it will one day rival the L Word. And that I’ll get to be on the L Word as Max’s new friend who just moved to LA from San Francisco. (Wait - that’s just one of my dreams.) Anyways, the theme of the series is that there is an aaamazing crashpad (location) that anyone with the key can pay a visit with a romantic date. But girls steal keys, sleep with little sisters, cheat, lie, you know all the shenanigans. Check out the trailer of the original feature film.

San Francisco - the queerest place on the planet with Katastrophe and Jenna Riot February 22, 2008

You would think that writing a queer/lesbian travel show about San Francisco would be easy. There are soooo many places! But that’s the problem - there are too many places. And people. Also, I’ve lived here for 6 years which means I am passionate about too many spots and want to share them all. There are also so many artists, DJs, writers, everything and I would love to feature all of them too. Well, good thing I live here - maybe I can feature one at a time.

So, while I’m still in pre-production on the Hot Situation travel guide for San Francisco, I’d like to share the Ice Cream Socialite’s guide to the city. Katastrophe and Jenna Riot were sweet enough to give us a Sunday in San Francisco to show us some of their favorite spots in the queerest place on the planet.

I have to say that my favorite part of shooting was when we showed up at the flea market, did some ’shopping,’ and then they took to the stage with a mp3 player and began singing and performing for the passersby. Of course we didn’t ask permission. Public art. Yeeaaahh!

(BTW - all you L Word fans. Katastrophe’s music was featured on an episode in the L Word in season 4. As was a poster of him on Max’s (Daniella Sea) bedroom wall. Max was making out with the intern. Remember?)

Santa Cruz Urban Day Trip - So gay! February 20, 2008

Filed under: Hot Situation - California — admin @ 2:04 pm

Santa Cruz is one of my favorite towns around - not only is the surrounding nature beautiful and the town cute as a button, but it has a progressive cultural and political history. Did you know it was the only government in American that attempted to impeach Bush? Those crazy Santa Cruz’ens. And lots o’ lesbos live there too. College kids and queer families alike.

Saturn Cafe is owned by a queer woman and serves some of the best vegetarian fare on the block. Yes, it is decked out in space paraphernalia including floating planets and bright murals. It is frequented by hot people making it one of the best places to cruise. You can start and end your day there - they serve a yummy brunch and stay open after the bars close to save the starving ‘partiers.’ It’s located at 145 Laurel St. on the corner of Pacific.

Keep walking down Pacific and you’ll hit this vintage clothes store called Retro Paradise. They have only been open for two years and I would argue that they have the best selection in town. I talked with one of the owners, Leopoldo A. Santos, who shared with me he is also the buyer and the guy you’ll find working the counter everyday. 1010 C-D Pacific Ave.

This is a picture of my shoe inside of Retro Paradise. They carry nice used boots. But if you are looking for kicks like mine head across the street to my favorite shoe store Old School Shoes. 1017 Pacific Ave.
