Its okay to want to be on the L Word

I finally found Winona Ryder in the bathroom of Ben’s Kosher Deli - Long Island, New York - and the film L.I.E. March 31, 2008

Ben’<p>s Kosher DeliAs some of you know, I had a child hood and teenage crush on Winona Ryder.  In fact, one of my first post shared how I used to search for her every summer on the streets of NYC and the beaches of Long Island when I came to visit my grandparents.  For some reason I thought I should spot her in New York, even though I knew she lived in LA and grew up in Petaluma.  So, today on my last trip to Long Island, NY to visit with my grandfather, I finally spotted Winona Ryder framed in the bathroom of Ben’s Kosher Deli in Greenvale, Long Island, NY where we all came to eat and commemorate  grandpa’s life.Winona Ryder  Now, that we are in Long Island I want to share a recent homorific film I finally saw.  It’s not super new, but it’s an Indie film that has been on my list for a while.  I was drawn to it from the picture on the cover; it screamed coming of age story and I’m a boy who looks like a girl.  One of my favorite kinds.  It does have subtle gay under tones as well as other life dramas worth exploring with the star including class consciousness,  abondonment, and confusing mentors (like the almost homorific ones - I know the kinds).  Check out the film L.I.E. (Long Island Expressway - I drove on it tonight)You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

My Grandpa - New York March 30, 2008

Filed under: Hot Situation - Queer women's travel. — admin @ 7:34 am

Hey there.  I’ve been away from the blogosphere for a few days because my beloved Grandfather passed away a few days ago.  Here I am in New York staying at a hotel with my family.  As I look to my right I can see the JFK airport.  So charming.I just wanted to give a tribute post to my gramps.  He has been a cool old guy in my life.  My insatiable love of travel is due in part to him taking us (his grand-kids) to other countries in my teenage years in a quest to uncover our ancestor’s stories as well as our trips to Long Island, NY every summer to visit the grandparents and my cousins.  That’s when I used to scour NYC and Jones beach looking for Winona Ryder, basically my child hood heart throb.Later, when I was out and proud, he was a pretty supportive grandpa.  I appreciate that.  How many grandmas and grandpas of that generation can you easily tell about your new girlfriend and your LGBT Travel show that you are working on?  Granted he never said the L word, G word, or any word of that caliber; but if everyone could easily say the L Word then the TV show’s name would have no drama to it.  JK.Thanks for everything Grandpa.  We’ll miss you.

Girls Rock! The Movie - Your riot grrrl dream come true March 26, 2008

Filed under: Hot Situation - Oregon, Queer Films you gotta see. — admin @ 9:06 am

Please go see this movie for inspiration and some tears of joy. Did you know that only 22% of musical performers are women? Would that be the singer in a 4 person band? Maybe, but this movie is about how girls can rock, either as singers or drummers, and also as themselves. In some warehouse in Portland, Oregon lives a summer camp that runs one session a year with counselors and contributors such as Beth Ditto of The Gossip and Cari Brownstein of Sleater Kinney. This is the girls camp of the riot grrrl generation - exploring issues such as confidence, self-esteem, self love, body image, and that girls can do anything boys can. I got welled up too many times. Beth talks about singing and how emotional it is, and then has 2o girls screaming “girls rock.” I got goose bumps.
