The Front Porch Restaurant - San Francisco April 18, 2008

Filed under: Hot Situation - San Francisco — admin @ 9:43 am

Bernal Heights Neighborhood What’s the difference between southern American food and Caribbean Soul food?  Any foodies out there?  Well, my response is Sarah Kirnon the chef and co-owner of the restaurant the Front Porch - she has all the answers.     Bernal Heights NeighborhoodShe’s the one on the left in case you were confused.  (Sorry, we look funny.  The photographer forgot tell us she was taking photos during the video interview)Hot Situation travel visited the Front Porch this past Sunday and learned about Caribbean style soul food from a Barbados native, why they chose name the Front Porch (rocking chairs anyone?), and why the restaurant seems to be a hot spot for the ladies.  We’re still not sure if it’s Sarah herself or the magic she works with her hands….it must be the combination. Check back for the San Francisco Hot Situation video travel guide this June.

The L Word’s Guinevere Turner at Opening Night Party of LGBTQ Cinema - San Francisco April 15, 2008

Guinevere Turner
‘In a gala evening celebrating the achievements of women filmmakers
specializing in lesbian-gay-bisexual-transperson-queer cinema, the 2007 San
Francisco Women’s Film Festival fills up 12 Galaxies with outstanding
films, Q&As with directors, dancing, catering from High Art Catering and
a live DJ. Special guest Guinevere Turner has appeared in films “Go
Fish,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma” and more, and co-wrote “American Psycho,”
“The Notorious Bettie Page,” and the television series, “The L Word.”‘ - SF Women’s Film Fest Blog

Sigh….Guinevere Turner. She is one of my heroes in queer filmmaking and acting. And she’s beautiful. She did an artist talk this past Saturday at the SF LGBT center and shared tidbits about her newest project; a TV series from writer-director Amber Sharp that captures the lives of several people in a Los Angeles apartment complex. Kinda sounds like Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City or Beverly Hills 90210. But now they’re all hella gay! Yay.

This is a still from her newest short film Hung. I wanted to share the trailer for her other short film Hummer with you as well. But I can’t seem to find trailers for them. Excuse me, Guinevere Turner, I met you at the Lexington Club this last year and I was hoping you would put up some of the trailers for your short films on youtube so I can blog about how amazing you are. I was the girl with the big curly fro, thanks. I’ll be looking out for them.

Lynne T. from Lesbians on Ecstasy DJ’s Hot Pants - San Francisco April 12, 2008

Lesbians on Ecstasy DJ, originally uploaded by shaevoyuer.

When I asked Chelsea Starr how she would describe her club Hot Pants in one sentence, she didn’t even use the whole sentence. “Sexy,” she says. Hot Situation Travel partied at Hot Pants last night with Chelsea Starr, Lynne T. from Lesbians on Ecstasy, DJ Cari Campbell, and danced it up with Jenna Riot. I’m not going to give away too much - you’ll have to wait to for the video to come out. But I will drop one little secret I found out in our interview with Chelsea - Starr is not really her last name. But there’s a lot more to it than that.

the unspoken segregation at Dinah Shore - Palm Springs, CA April 1, 2008

Filed under: Hot Situation - California — admin @ 8:10 am

An OurChart editor, Zina Camblen, brought up an interesting topic that she’s worried about as she gets ready to attend Dinah Shore for the first time.  These were my thoughts.  As I sit here wearing my heterosexual backpack of privilege, whoops…I mean white back pack of privilege (I’m gayer than anyone I know), I wonder will humans ever change. Straights hang with straights (except a few gay friends and fag hags), lesbians with lesbians, fags with fags, same with same with same. As much as leaders and activists do anti-hate work, laws change, and we all feel like things are getting a tinnnnyyy bit better, I still look around me and see my mostly white, middle class, lesbian, women friends.  Of course lesbians of color are invited to the main parties and the white girls are invited to lesbian of color parties (i think) these days. But look around yourself, or if you are especially utopically brought up or live, look at some folks around you, people crave what is comfortable and easy, where they might feel good or please their ego, and/or just go with the flow of their friends. Some one up there said it when she admitted that any party makes her socially awkward. Now, I’ll simply say that my friends around me are due to just having things in common. I don’t consciously choose just white lesbian friends -I have a variety of friends of different back grounds etc. Ironically the only time I went to Dinah Shore I was with mostly people of color - we rented our own house, went to the ‘white party’ for too much money, and decided only the pool parties were worth it.  (And some drunk dyke took my shirt off at the Suicide Girl’s party - I think she was white, but I was too wasted to remember anything except that I needed my shirt, cowboy hat, and to get home ASAP.)

Arlan and her tenthousand people - Hello! What about San Francisco? March 25, 2008

I just checked out Arlan’s new website, www.tenthousandpeople.com, and was impressed again by her creativity.  She is attempting to meet 10,000 people in person in order to raise funds for her independent magazine Interlude.  She plans to do this all over LA, San Diego and Chicago.  I have one question Arlan.  What about San Francisco!?    I could hook you up girl.  You need a personal tour guide (me) to take you to all the spots where we can make this happen. You would go home with photos of hella hot SF folks (and maybe some cash.)  We could get dressed up and go to Mecca - the snazzy lesbo bar in the Castro and set up a booth.  A kissing booth maybe?  You know how to get in touch with me.  I’m serious. You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video
