Its okay to want to be on the L Word

Rock Star Guide to the Galaxy: Uh Huh Her - Los Angeles August 22, 2008

There was a long time when I was hatin’ on L.A. I guess if you’re not from here (here being San Francisco), you don’t know about this invisible line somewhere just above Santa Barbara that divides Northern and Southern California. It’s where people’s tans start to fade, their hair gets darker, and as Northern Californians will argue, they stop wasting so many natural resources.

I grew up in the suburbs of LA and Lauren (Co-producer) grew up in San Diego, but we’ve lived in the bay area for some 10 years, so we were curious to ask the ladies of Uh Huh Her, both L.A. transplants (Leisha Hailey comes from Nebraska, Camila Grey from Texas), if they could dispel or confirm some myths about Los Angeles. Check out what they had to say about fact and fiction in SoCal, and watch Pt. 2 of their Rock Star Guide to the Galaxy after the jump.

Rhapsody: The weather is always perfect in Los Angeles.
Camila & Leisha (in unison): True. You turn on the news and it’s suns across the screen.

True or false: Nobody walks in L.A.
Camila: [Starts singing Missing Persons.]
Leisha: True. I tried once, but then I just felt out of place.

True or false: Everyone in L.A. has had plastic surgery.
Leisha: Just Cam.
Camila: [Shrugs.]

True or false: There are famous people everywhere you look.
Camila: [Looks at Leisha who stars on Showtime's The L-Word.] Umm…
Leisha: No, not really.
Camila: I mean, well, sometimes you go to the grocery store and someone looks familiar, but you’re not sure who they are.
Leisha: So, you’re saying it’s true then.
Camila: Well, um … maybe.

(Side note: Camila and Leisha totally freaked out when they saw Ron Jeremy at two in the morning on Hollywood Blvd. They ran over to us and asked us to unpack everything and film them together)

Fast forward one night to the green room at the Roxy. We’re testing microphones or something and in walks Clea DuVall (of The Faculty) and Freddie Prinze, Jr. (of Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed). I mean, we think it was him, we’re not sure. He looked familiar. Anyway, Clea walks up and introduces herself to me, then an interesting conversation ensued about the Northern/Southern California divide. “Northern California is great, the only problem is you guys hate people from Southern California.” “No we don’t.” “Yes you do, I lived there in Marin while I was working on a movie. I know.”

Now, I can’t speak for the millions of people I live with North of the invisible divide, but I have to say, L.A. has grown on me. I hope you enjoy the tour.

Beth Lisick and Tara Jepson’s new show- San Francisco August 7, 2008

Tara Jepson and Beth Lisick

The first time I really had a taste of Tara Jepson and Beth Lisick’s work was one evening during a San Francisco film benefit. They volunteered their time to perform a Mitsi and Carole skit, then followed with their short film Diving for Pearls. I was inspired, in love, and my belly hurt from laughing.

Just last weekend I went to see their new show Getting in on the Ground Floor and Staying There.  They refer to nudity as a downer which of course is how they open the show.  Strobe lights and spastic nude dancing.  Not a downer really, just unexpected and maybe embarrassing.  But for who?  I think that question is posed through out their show.  They also bring to light the 10 year anniversary of working together while reviewing and reflecting on past work and current selves.  During the show, we get to see the evolution of Carole and Mitzi as characters and by the end I felt like I really knew them and related to their struggle.  And we met Tara’s Mom.

I pose one more question.  Why are they not more famous and on SNL yet?  I think I should “hire” Carole and Mitzi to help “produce” Hot Situation.  They won’t even have to move off of their couch!

Watch this Beth Lisick vid.  It’s nice.

When our friends start getting married - San Francisco August 1, 2008

I do have friends that are getting married or have already been married, but I actually don’t know the guys in this video. But it’s amazing. We should all make videos like this. (feel free to leave out the credits next time!)

Electrocute, CSS, and Hottub = Hecka cute - San Francisco July 21, 2008

Filed under: Hot Situation - Queer women's travel. — admin @ 3:10 pm

This past weekend was filled with Electrocuteness. Saturday night I headed to Gray Area gallery to a special event - the kind where you need to be on some list and if you happen to be the guest of the real guest list person, than you don’t really know what is going on except that there is free wine, a fruit platter, and you are excited to be there to see Electrocute. We danced our retro dance moves similar to the moves in this new CSS video.
Left Behind

For the cute in electrocute, check out their videos. Campy, colorful, and hecka cute. I have to come to LA for a Hot Situation with Electrocute. I’m drooling.

And last but not least, I’m officially stalking Hottub. I would love them to star in my Hot Situation - San Francisco (bay area) show. After I read an interview with them in the best of pride issue in the SF Guardian, I was brought to light tears. I swear. When I hear about girls kicking ass and owning shit - I get all emotional. And they did a photo shoot in Card burg. It’s such a Hot Situation. Check them out this Friday July 25 at 111 Minna.
